Before you start

What to have to hand

None of this is compulsory and an estimate is better than a blank. The more of it you can give, the closer the first price is to the final one.

  1. Both postcodes The collection point and the delivery point. A full postcode is best, but the first part is enough to start, because distance is the single biggest thing that sets a price.
  2. When it has to move The date, and the window at each end if there is one. A delivery that has to be there before a site closes is a different job from one that can arrive any time that day.
  3. What the load is Pallets, boxes, a single item, or something that needs handling with care. Say if it is fragile, high value, or awkward to lift, because that changes the vehicle and sometimes the crew.
  4. Weight and dimensions Rough figures are fine. The thing that matters is whether it fits through a door, onto a tail lift, or only into a curtainsider, and whether the weight is legal for the vehicle.
  5. Anything about access A narrow lane, a height barrier, no forklift at the delivery end, a booking-in slot. These are the details that turn a smooth job into a failed one, and they are much cheaper to know now.

Pricing

Why this is quoted and not a price list

A parcel network can publish a price because every parcel is treated the same: it is sorted at a depot, it rides with thousands of others, and it arrives when the network gets to it. Freight does not work that way. The vehicle goes where your goods need to go, when they need to be there.

That means three things set the price, and all three change with every job. How far the vehicle travels, including whether it has a return load or comes back empty. Which vehicle the load actually needs, because a pallet that will not fit a transit is a different job from one that will. And when it has to be there, because a deadline removes the option of combining your consignment with anyone else's.

A published price would have to assume the worst case on all three and charge for it. Quoting from the real job is how you avoid paying for a lorry when a van would do.

Questions

Quoting, answered

Do I need exact weights and measurements?

No. Send your best estimate and say that it is an estimate. What matters at quoting stage is the order of magnitude, because that decides the vehicle. If the load turns out to be materially different when we collect, we will tell you before anything moves rather than invoice you for it afterwards.

What if I do not know which vehicle I need?

Choose 'Help me choose' on the form and describe the load instead. Picking the vehicle is our job, and it is the part most often got wrong when people guess. Over-specifying costs you money and under-specifying wastes a journey.

Can you quote for a regular run rather than a single job?

Yes. Tell us the route, how often it runs and what travels on it, and it is quoted as a schedule rather than job by job. A run with a known shape is easier to plan around, which is normally reflected in the price.

Is the quote the price I pay?

The quote is the price for the job as described. It changes only if the job changes: a different address, a different load, a wait at one end that was not in the brief, or access that turns out to need a different vehicle. If any of that comes up, you hear about it at the time.

What happens to my details?

They are used to price and run the delivery, and that is all. We do not sell them on and we do not add you to a marketing list because you asked for a price.

Is the consignment insured?

Goods in transit cover applies to consignments we carry. High value loads should be flagged on the form, because cover has limits and it is better to agree the right level before the vehicle is loaded than to discover it afterwards.
