A same-day job is a direct run. The consignment is collected, it goes in a vehicle on its own, and it travels to the delivery point without passing through a sorting hub. That is the whole difference from a parcel network, and it is why same-day costs more and arrives when it is supposed to.

What it covers

The work, named

Direct, point to point
Collected from you and driven to the delivery address. No depot, no transfer between vehicles, no overnight hub.
Dedicated to your consignment
The vehicle is not doing other drops on the way, so the route is yours and the timing is predictable.
Quoted from the actual job
The price comes from the distance, the vehicle the load needs and the deadline, which is why it is quoted rather than listed.
Confirmed on delivery
You are told when it is collected and told when it lands, rather than left refreshing a tracking page.

Start to finish

How it runs

  1. You send the job Both postcodes, what it is and the deadline. That is enough to say what vehicle it needs and what it costs.
  2. A vehicle is assigned The nearest suitable vehicle is routed to you. Which vehicle depends on the load, not on what happens to be nearest.
  3. Collected and driven direct Loaded once, then straight to the delivery point. No depot, no transfer, no other drops on the way.
  4. Confirmed on delivery You are told when it lands rather than left refreshing a page.

When this is the one

Jobs that call for it

  • A production line is down waiting on a part
  • A document or sample has to be somewhere today
  • A consignment missed its booked slot and the deadline has not moved
  • The goods are too valuable or too fragile for a network sort
  • A delivery failed and the customer is waiting

Pricing

What moves the price

No price list, because the three things that set the cost change with every job. These are the ones that matter on this service.

The distance the vehicle covers
Not the distance between the two postcodes. A vehicle has to reach you before the job starts, and that leg is part of it.
The vehicle the load needs
A small van and a 7.5 tonne lorry do not cost the same per mile, and the gap is not small.
The deadline
A hard deadline removes the option of combining your consignment with other work, so the vehicle does your job and only your job.
The return leg
On a long run, whether there is a load coming back can matter more than anything else on this list.

Before you ask

What to tell us

An estimate beats a blank. The more of this you can give, the closer the first price is to the final one.

  • Both full postcodes, because a town name can cover 25 miles
  • The real deadline rather than a comfortable one
  • Roughly what it weighs and the size of the largest single item
  • Whether anything about it is fragile, high value or awkward to lift
  • Access at both ends: height barriers, narrow lanes, booking-in slots
  • Who the driver asks for at each end, and a number for them

Questions

The things people ask

How is this different from an overnight courier?

An overnight network collects from many senders, sorts everything at a depot overnight and delivers the next working day. A same-day run skips all of that: one collection, one vehicle, one delivery. Nothing is sorted and nothing is handled more than it has to be.

What does it cost?

It is quoted per job, because the three things that set the price all change: how far the vehicle travels, which vehicle the load actually needs, and when it has to be there. Send those details and you get a clear price back before anything is booked.

What size of load can go same-day?

Anything from an envelope to a vehicle load. The size decides the vehicle rather than whether the job can be done, so tell us the dimensions and the weight along with the postcodes.

How late in the day can a same-day job still work?

It depends on the distance and on drivers' hours, which are not negotiable. A short run across a city is a different question from one the length of the country, where there is a point in the day after which the law makes it a next-morning delivery. Ask and you get a straight answer rather than an optimistic one.

Can you collect from more than one place on the same run?

Yes. Give us every collection point and every delivery point and it is planned as one job. That is usually cheaper than treating them as separate runs, because the vehicle is already out.

What happens if the goods are not ready when the driver arrives?

A reasonable wait is part of the job. Beyond that it is chargeable, because a vehicle sitting in a yard is a vehicle not earning. The fix is not to negotiate the waiting rate, it is to tell us about the delay before the vehicle is dispatched.
